Close by the Ground - Edition of 75
More of an intimate “portrait” of a Lapwing “Vanellus vanellus” one of my favourite birds as it always reminds me of the marshes of east Kent where I grew up. They are such stunning birds with their wonderful crest and dark iridescent plumage. Large flocks were a common sight here once and are becoming so again slowly but surely.
The title of this etching comes from a farmer I worked for when I was a student who said to “watch for Pewits (as he called Lapwings) as they’re always close by the ground” - a warning to keep an eye out for them and their nests during spring cultivation and drilling. A lot of time was spent walking the fields and putting in canes to mark the nexts so none were disturbed.
Line etching and Aquatint. 8” x 16”
